What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization, explained

AEO is about making your website useful to an answer engine, not just visible in a list of search results.

AEO is making your page the thing an assistant reads out when someone asks a question, rather than a link someone clicks. It means writing clear, specific answers that ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and similar tools can understand, trust and use. For a local business, that could mean being named when someone asks, “Which barber in Bristol is open on Sunday?” rather than appearing as the seventh blue link.

What does AEO mean?

AEO means Answer Engine Optimization: shaping your website so an AI assistant can find, understand and quote its useful information. Traditional SEO often aims to win a position in a search results page. AEO aims to supply the answer inside the response itself.

The two overlap. A page that loads quickly, works on a phone and explains its subject clearly can help both. But the desired result is different. SEO asks, “How do I get the click?” AEO also asks, “Can the system safely repeat one sentence from this page?”

How do ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity choose what to quote?

These systems usually combine the question, available web sources, the wording of each page and signals about whether a source is relevant and credible. The exact process differs by product and can change without notice.

Perplexity generally shows its web-search and citation process more openly. It retrieves pages for a question, then produces an answer with source links. ChatGPT may answer from its trained knowledge, use web search when available, or use connected tools. Claude can work from information supplied in the conversation and, in some versions or products, from web results. A page cannot assume that every assistant uses the same index or sees the same sources.

In practice, a source is easier to quote when it does four things well:

  • Answers the exact question instead of circling around it.
  • States the relevant fact in a short, self-contained sentence.
  • Shows signs of being current and relevant to the subject.
  • Gives enough context for the assistant to avoid changing the meaning.

Nobody outside these companies knows the precise weight given to word choice, links, brand mentions, freshness, user behaviour, domain reputation or other signals. The companies do not publish a dependable AEO scoring formula. Anyone promising a fixed recipe for getting quoted is guessing beyond the evidence.

Why is marketing language hard for an assistant to quote?

Marketing language is hard to quote because it often makes a promise without stating a checkable fact. Phrases such as “premium solutions for modern lifestyles” do not tell an assistant what the business sells, who it serves, where it operates or how much it costs.

Compare these two descriptions for a barber shop. The first sounds polished but gives an assistant little to work with: “Experience exceptional grooming in a welcoming environment, where traditional craft meets modern style.” The second is plain and quotable: “Haircut: 25 EUR. Beard trim: 12 EUR. Open Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00. Walk-ins are welcome.”

The second version contains facts a system can lift without inventing details. It also helps a person decide quickly. Plain copy is not anti-brand. You can still explain the shop’s style and service. Put those details after the basic answer, not instead of it.

Why do question headings help so much?

Question headings help because they match the way people ask assistants and make each section’s purpose explicit. A heading such as “Do you offer emergency plumbing?” gives both the reader and the system a clear question to resolve.

A vague heading such as “Our approach” hides the subject. The answer might be about response times, qualifications or materials. A system must infer the question before it can identify the answer. That extra inference creates more opportunities for a vague or incomplete result.

Use headings that resemble real queries, but do not force every heading into awkward wording. Good examples include:

  • “How much does a boiler repair cost?”
  • “Are appointments available on Sundays?”
  • “Who is this bookkeeping service for?”
  • “How quickly can you deliver to Manchester?”

Then answer the heading in the first sentence below it. If the heading asks about price, give the price first. If the answer depends on circumstances, say what changes it and give a useful range or example.

Which facts should a business state plainly?

A business should state the facts that help someone decide whether to contact it: what it offers, who it is for, where it serves, what it costs, when it is open and what happens next.

Prices are especially useful. If the final price varies, explain the starting price and the reason for the variation. “Garden clearances from £180 for gardens up to 50 square metres; larger gardens are quoted after a visit” is more useful than “competitive rates.”

Hours, service areas and eligibility matter just as much. A childcare provider can say, “We accept children aged two to five and open Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00.” A solicitor can say, “We handle employment disputes for small businesses in Leeds and offer a 30-minute initial call.”

  1. 1.Name the service in ordinary words.
  2. 2.State the main price, range or pricing rule.
  3. 3.Say who the service is for and who it is not for.
  4. 4.List the location, service area and opening hours.
  5. 5.Give a date when information is likely to change, where useful.

What does good AEO copy look like?

Good AEO copy answers a real question in a sentence that still makes sense when removed from the page. These before-and-after examples show the difference.

Example 1: a café

Before: “Discover a vibrant culinary journey where bold flavours and warm hospitality come together.” After: “Our café serves breakfast and lunch in York city centre. Breakfast runs from 08:00 to 11:30, and vegetarian options are available.”

Example 2: a plumber

Before: “Your trusted partner for all your home comfort needs, delivered with excellence.” After: “We repair leaking taps, toilets and radiators in Sheffield. Emergency call-outs are available 24 hours a day and start at £95, excluding parts.”

Example 3: a software consultant

Before: “We empower ambitious teams to transform their operations and achieve sustainable growth.” After: “We help UK retailers move stock records from spreadsheets into Shopify. The fixed-price setup costs £1,200 and usually takes two weeks.”

The after versions are not necessarily better advertising copy. They are better answers. You can add proof, personality and persuasive detail around them, while keeping the core facts easy to find.

How do you measure AEO when there is no ranking number?

You measure AEO through the quality and frequency of answers about your business, not through one universal ranking position. There is no Google-style AEO number that applies consistently across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity.

Track a set of real questions your customers might ask. For a dog groomer, that could include “How much does dog grooming cost in Norwich?” and “Which Norwich dog groomers take nervous dogs?” Run those questions across the assistants you care about, record whether your business appears, and save the wording of the answer and citations.

  • Use the same questions each month, while adding new ones from sales calls and customer messages.
  • Record whether the answer names your business, describes it accurately and links to the right page.
  • Check practical outcomes such as calls, direction requests, form submissions and bookings.
  • Review incorrect answers and update the page with the missing or outdated fact.

Treat this as a sample, not a scientific score. Responses can vary by location, account, date, model, browsing setting and previous conversation. A citation is useful evidence, but it does not prove that the assistant will always quote you.

What should you change on your website first?

Start with the pages that already answer high-value customer questions, then make their key facts unmistakable. You do not need to rewrite every page at once.

  1. 1.List ten questions customers ask before buying.
  2. 2.Match each question to one page on your site.
  3. 3.Put a direct answer in the first paragraph under a useful heading.
  4. 4.Add prices, hours, locations, service limits and dates where they apply.
  5. 5.Check that the page says the same thing as your Google Business Profile and other listings.
  6. 6.Review the copy when a price, service or opening hour changes.

RubyFlow can help keep a site’s own copy aligned with the language people use in searches and questions. The underlying job remains editorial: say what you do, give the facts, and keep them current.

What does nobody know about AEO yet?

Nobody knows the exact formula these assistants use to decide which source to quote, or how stable those choices are over time. We also do not know how much each system weighs traditional search signals, source authority, wording, freshness, user location, citations or popularity in a particular answer.

It is reasonable to test clear, accurate and well-supported pages. It is not reasonable to claim that a certain word count, heading pattern or number of links guarantees an AI citation. AEO is a practical publishing approach, not a published algorithm with a score you can optimise to three decimal places.

Common questions

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO aims to help a page appear prominently in search results. AEO aims to make the page’s information clear and useful enough for an AI assistant to include or quote in its answer. The same page can benefit from both.
How can I make my website more likely to be quoted by ChatGPT?
Write direct answers to real customer questions, state your prices, services, locations and opening hours, keep the information current, and explain claims with specific evidence. ChatGPT does not publish a guaranteed formula for citations.
Do question headings improve AEO?
Question headings can improve clarity because they show exactly what the following section answers. They are useful when they reflect real customer questions, but a heading alone does not guarantee that an assistant will quote the page.
Is there an AEO ranking score I can check?
No universal AEO ranking score exists. You can track whether your business appears in answers to a consistent set of questions across assistants, but results vary by model, date, location, account and browsing settings.
What information should a local business add for AEO?
A local business should clearly state what it sells, who it serves, its address or service area, prices or starting prices, opening hours, booking rules and any important limits. For example: “Haircuts cost 25 EUR, we serve central Lisbon, and we open Sundays from 10:00 to 16:00.”
